Japanese manual thermometer has invaded a good number of public spaces to assess people's temperatures, identify those who might have a fever and, consequently, possible SARS-CoV-2 infection. However, the way they are used today limits their effectiveness and reliability. How do they work? The basic principle of these Japanese manual thermometers is thermography, that is, capturing the heat or radiation emitted by people, and depending on its wavelength, determining its temperature. Through an algorithm, the device converts these wavelengths into electrical signals and then into digital signals, which we can easily interpret in degrees. It is important to know, then, that these devices do not emit light or radiation, they only receive it, therefore, they do not involve any risk to people, or to any part of their body. Many people are afraid of the light they see when the thermometer is placed on their forehead, but really that light is not harmful, it only serves to mark the point
